Debate #1

The stakes:

Clearly a big Obama win would tough for Mitt to overcome.

Can Mitt lay a glove O?  He can't just point that O's record is one of failure.  Everyone who agrees with that statement is already on board.  He's got to convince people he actually has a plan to improve economic outcomes--a plan that will benefit even the 47%.

A tall order for the Mittster.

I know I'm biased, but I think mitt absolutely killed it tonight.

And now I know it for a fact...those bags over at msnbc are absolutely weeping about obama's performance.

Chris Matthews is in an absolutely frothy breakdown right now... Magical!

Well, we'll see. The press is positively a-glow with praise for Mitt's performance. And I thought Mitt did a nice job in this debate, and clearly won on points. I just don't think it's the "KO" everyone's saying.

I'm not sure if there was a moment that will really stick with voters in 3, 4 or 5 days, never mind weeks. Mitt was strong, but did he or Obama say anything to fundamentally change the concept of either candidate? I'm going to go with no.

Let me clarify that: the trend line in this race is very bad. You see it most notably in the swing state numbers (esp. OH, MI, WI, NH), and in the US Sen races that are tightly contested. There has been a move to the Dems of 5 points or more in these states in the past few weeks. That's seismic in national politics.

People have been making up their minds, in droves, that the GOP does not offer a better alternative to the status quo.

In light of that, where is the line that can be a 30 second TV spot, or that will get repeated around the water cooler? Something that can really go viral and encapsulate the Romney "advantage."

I didn't hear it. Let me know if you did.

My answer to that is simple. While there were a lot of memorable lines and moments for me, I think the real zinger of this debate that will have staying power is not any one line. Rather, it is the fact that mitt so thoroughly dominated Obama for the full 90 minutes. Such a lopsided presidential debate has not occurred in decades. That it was so universally acknowledged, even by MSDNC, is telling.

I also don't expect the unemployment numbers to change anything. I didn't believe Obama couldn't win with unemployment above 8%, and I don't think he automatically wins with it below 8%. People don't need to look around much to see economy still blows, and that debt and deficit is skyrocketing.

Polls showing great post-debate bounce for Mitt.
