McCain VP

Apparently McCain has begun the process of compiling the long list of VP candidates.

It is really hard to figure how his thought process goes. Does he go with loyalty and pick someone he knows well and owes something to, or does he make a pragmatic choice that is likely to help him the most? Also, is it better to have someone who is in some way tied to Bush (e.g., Portman) since that would appease conservatives and make it far easier for him to tap into the Bush fundraising $ he has thus far been unable to, or does that alienate too many voters in '08 and make it easier for Dems to say McCain=4 more years of Bush?

Portman's obviously been getting a lot of support behind the scenes, and I'd like to offer some opinions before the train gets too far down the track.

But first, let me start by offering the caveat that I've never seen this guy speak, even on TV. So if you're looking for a first-person informed decision, go somewhere else.

That said, allow me to spout off using my circumstantially informed pre-judgments.

I can't say that this Portman momentum is a good thing. I'm not buying that a former Congressman from the already-GOP leaning portion of the state is going to be the deciding factor in carrying OH, or make a difference in neighboring IN and KY (if those states don't go GOP anyway, we're hosed). At the same time, he kind of seems like a jack-of-all trades-master-of-none.

Foreign policy? He was a diplomat (for a year).

Trade policy? He was USTR (for a year)

Economic policy? Budget director (for a year).

Proven vote getter? Sure, locally in a GOP heavy district, but not even at the state level.

He seems like a socially-conservative-but-not-offensively-so country club Republican who won't get anyone excited but won't turn off any rank-and-file conservatives either. Basically, the anti-McCain on almost every level.
