At the end of the day, I think this analysis is correct in so far as McCain will have to run against Bush. There may be room, however, for a shrewd campaign to actually take a Bush insider and make a more efficacious argument against the Bush Administration. The insider (Condi in this case) would have to be willing to contrast her personal opinions with those eventually settled on by the President. I tend to doubt she would be willing to do this.
The safer play is to avoid a Bush person altogether.
I agree, although interestingly this poll suggests a McCain-Rice ticket would win handily, and even in NY over Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama! Of course, it is an NBC/Marist poll, not Zogby or Rasmussen that tend to be more reliable.
Actually, Marist is apparently one of the better NY polling outfits out there.
Still, I have a hard time swallowing these results.
