Bayh is out
Sen. Bayh (D, IN) to announce that he will not run for re-election this year. This is a shocking surprise. Bayh is a fairly moderate Dem who has always enjoyed very high support from red-leaning Indiana, and despite challenges from Coats and others probably would have won again this year had he run.
This can't be seen as anything other than another crushing blow to Dem party.

Murtha passed on, Dodd is out, Bayh is out. Reid is in serious trouble. What's the whole picture look like now?
Republicans also have a lot of retiring seats up for grabs, but it sounds like barring some hideous disaster the Repubs will at a minimum pick up seats in both the House and Senate. There is a chance they could pick up enough seats to actually become the Senate majority, but apparently that is still a longshot.
Boxer is also in a bit of trouble in CA. She's leading all Repub challengers, but is consistently polling below 50% which supposedly is an indication of a potential loss for an incumbent.
My question is this: is Bayh planning on a primary challenge to the President?
