Ongoing Veepstakes
Medved weighs in with his pros and cons for about 15 or so possible veep choices. He's pro-Jindal big-time, but does a very nice and thorough job vetting the other possibilities. This is definitely worth a read. Sorry DC, he's not as fired up about Palin!
Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska? An intriguing possibility, because this athlete and former beauty queen has already inspired an admiring website called “America’s Hottest Governor.” At 44, she definitely brings youth (and charisma) to the ticket, but experience is a real problem: she’s been governor less than two years, and before that served only as mayor of the town of Wasilla (hardly qualification for leader of the free world).

Medved's one of the few who I've heard mention Rell or Keating, and both are intriguing. But if McCain was going to go the pro-choice route, I still think he'd go for Rudy or Ridge before Rell, and if he was going to go for an old white guy who's down-to-earth-and-likeable but a little bit of a loose cannon, he'd probably just run on the top and bottom of the ticket rather than include Keating.
In other speculation, Brooks makes the case that picking a veep is more about governance than getting elected, and that T-Paw and Portman are the two best plays for McCain. I actually agree with Brooks on that point, but I think you end up with the best of both worlds. When you pick a veep based on governance rather than voter outreach, it signals to voters that you're placing the responsibilities of the job over your ambition. And that, paradoxically, should help you pick up voters.
I'm sure Brooks is probably thinking the same thing, but is offering up his opinion (governance over outreach) to McCain and letting him get to the good political outcome on his own.
Kinda like how I'm always figuring things out and my wife is like, "wow, Fredo, that's really good thinking..."
Just to clear up what I meant: I agree with Brooks on the importance of the veep in the administration vs. strictly as a voter outreach tool. I don't necessarily agree that Portman and Pawlenty are heads-and-shoulders above the other possibilities on that accord. Mitt and Rudy can both lay a solid claim to executive ability.
