McCain short list

Crist, Jindal and Romney the three main guys on the short list? Possibly, according to this theory.

Or perhaps they are not the three, and McCain is letting them know in advance, and offering them cabinet positions?

Three quick points on this story, the first of which I'm stealing from another poster at Race 4 '08, where this story is generating a lot of discussion:

1) Don't be surprised to see McCain have another BBQ in 2 weeks with a new set of veep potentials.

2) Mitt is the obvious choice if this is the final 3.

3) Jindal is almost certainly the frontrunner to be the GOP candidate in '12 or '16. Running as McCain's veep now doesn't really help him, unless McCain's going to win two terms, which I just don't see. I think Jindal is in a better position to run in the future if he stays in his current job and accomplishes more of his agenda for the people of LA.

I just have a hard time imagining that Mac is gonna pick Mitt. Even thought the politics makes sense to some degree, Mac is someone who makes decisions in his gut, and I just don't think he like Mitt. Mac thinks he's a weenie, IMO.

The SUSA polls that came out showing various Pres/Veep tickets definitely hurt Pawlenty the most.

I'm shocked that Huck and Rudy are not at this BBQ. Note that none of the pro-abortion possibles are there--Rudy, Ridge, and Rice most notably. I take that back--if you consider Lieberman a veep possible, I guess there is one pro-abort.

Glad to see that Brownback is a McCain inner-circle guy.

Some more random thoughts for a McCain cabinet:

Veep - Pawlenty
State - Rice (I'd love to her stay on)
Defense - Lieberman
Homeland Security - Rudy
Treasury - Mitt
AG - Brownback
Education - Huck

I can see almost all of those cabinet picks, although maybe he'll add another woman or minority. I was thinking Huck for education or health a while back, since those are two things he stressed as governor.

Mitt as Treasury and Rudy as Homeland would be brilliant choices, and slam dunks IMO.

Lieberman as defense probably makes sense, given that he's one of the few non-Dove Dems, and also since I'm not sure what other position he could give him.

Philip Klein (AmSpec) agrees with my comments on Jindal as veep, but does it more better:

Jindal would, without a doubt, add instant conservative appeal to his ticket, as well as youth, and a brilliant mastery of policy. But the problem is that at 36, he's still quite inexperienced, and thus picking him to be a heartbeat away from the presidency will undercut the central argument McCain is making against Obama. And I know this is a factor more for the future of conservative politics in general than for McCain specifically, but after years of the Bush administration, conservatives are in desperate need of a strong story of successul governance. In eight years, Jindal will still be young, but he could have a Giuliani-type turnaround story in Lousiana--only without the personal bagage or problems with social conservatives. Nominating him as VP would be like when a baseball team trades away its top pitiching prospect midseason in hopes of winning now.

I think you meant "more betterer".

Oh, yeah. Never was much of a grammar guy.
