The religion of peace
Enraged over the Pope repeating a Byzantine Emperor's words (in the midst of a long and eloquent speech) that jihad is violent and evil, Muslims have responded by... threatening violence against the Pope, the Church, and the Western world, and then shooting a nun. That should help exonerate Islam of the charges.

Another "peaceful" response:
The Basra demonstration came as an al Qaeda linked militant group vowed a war against the "worshippers of the cross" in response to the pope's speech.
"We tell the worshipper of the cross (the Pope) that you and the West will be defeated, as is the case in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya," said an Internet statement by the Mujahideen Shura Council, an umbrella group led by Iraq's branch of al Qaeda, according to the Reuters news agency.
"We shall break the cross and spill the wine. ... God will (help) Muslims to conquer Rome. ... God enable us to slit their throats, and make their money and descendants the bounty of the mujahideen," said the statement.

Note how the Shura council conflates the West, Christianity, the US, and Russia. Somebody should tell these guys about the separation of Church of State. Haven't they read the Consitution? I mean, gosh.
It's pretty clear by the way they are grouping anything non-Muslim together that for them this is purely a religious war. That is the only filter they are using. Anyone who would consider the US and Russia as good allies working together today is clearly looking at the world through a pretty strange, specific filter.
Even clearer statement of al qaeda's position:
"...then the only thing acceptable is a conversion (to Islam) or (killed by) the sword."

Don't blame them. Blame the Bush-Ratzinger crusade conspiracy, which has left the Muslims no choice but aggressive self-defense.
And finding defenseless women who care for the infirm and wear a habit, and shooting them in the back of the head four times. It's like W pulled the trigger himself.
