Republicans Strike Again
Mehlman is out. Thoughts that Steele might replace him, or more likely Steele might get a position in Bush's administration next year.
If Repubs want to attract minority voters, may make more sense to make Steele RNC chair rather than Bush's cabinet. I say this b/c Bush already has put the most minorities in the highest cabinet positions of ANY U.S. president in history, but I'm not sure it's translated into votes. The irony is crushing though - Dems talk the talk about helping minorities, but it's Republicans who actually walk the walk and put them in positions of power.

I like Steele and would love to see the GOP find a place for him on the national scene. RNC Chair would not be my first choice for him, although I admit that is just at first blush.
It would seem that the right candidate for the RNC would be one with national contacts, not just with the candidates, but with the deep pockets that fund the party. In short, a behind-the-scenes guy who had worked on national campaigns before. Rendell seems like the perfect example on the Dem side.
That said, I don't know what Atwater's background was before his chairmanship, or Haley Barbour's, Marc Racicot's, or Ken Mehlman's, for that matter. Perhaps they only had local- or state-level experience before they took over the RNC.
I would think that a position in the Administration would be a better career boost if he's planning on seeking elected office. I don't think putting him in the cabinet would benefit Bush or Republicans now, but it could benefit Steele (and hence Republicans) later.
