Mitt
If I were running Mitt's campaign, I would suggest he start visiting Iraq every 3-4 months and Afghanistan every 6 months. I would then make sure to hire a team of 2-3 foreign policy heavyweights to start formulating a clear policy for GWOT, Iraq, Iran, N. Korea, etc. Mitt will easily be able to speak intelligently and credibly on a lot of domestic policy issues, but will definitely need to bolster his foreign policy creds.
What do people think will be top issues in '08 campaign? Most likely (in no particular order), I'd guess:
1. Iraq (although it will be interesting to see where this is in '08 with two years of Dem congress)
2. Social issues (abortion, marriage, stem cells, ...)
3. Economy (unemployment, types of jobs in US, taxes, twin deficits, ...)
4. Terrorism (role of pre-emptive strikes, building democracies, US border control, wire-tapping, torture, ...)
5. Illegal immigration
6. Increasing burden of Medicare and Social Security

Foreign policy will likley be the number one issue. Mitt has all the skills to be an effective executive w/r/t foreign policy. He's analytical, careful in speech, forceful in persuing the course he considers correct, and sees clearly that jihadists can't be negotiated with.
The whole "foreign policy creds" issue is an interesting one. It's always bandied about when Presidential elections come around, but for the most part, it's governors that get elected president. And none of them have any real foreign policy experience to speak of.
Take Reagan. He ran California. Did that qualify him to lead the US through the climax of the Cold War? Apparently so. Or Giuliani, who many Republican consider the most solid option on GWOT. What are his foreign policy creds...mayor?
Now I think Rudy would be great w/r/t to GWOT, my point is just that it's tough to talk about "creds." No one's been President until they are President. You're always learning on the job to one degree or another. But we have to evaluate these guys on if they have the vision, intellect, energy, diplomacy, and administrative capacity to set policy and carry it out. Mitt looks good in my book.
I'll take any GOP candidate to the Dems, including Hagel.
Whoa--an anonymous comment!
Who is this stranger?
Welcome to the party, pal!
I'm feeling the winds blowing and it looks like it's time for me to start backing a candidate.
So move on over--I'm jumping on the Romney wagon before it leaves the station.
Again, not that there's a hellova lot I can do living here...oh, well.
Beasty: you still holding out for the real man (Hunter)? On the issues, the guy is the shizzle. And that's the kind of analysis you just can't pay for.
