Huckabee's Horton?
While I always take anything I read in the Boston Globe (which is rare, I only wind up there if I link through from Drudge or RCP) with a grain of salt, if the facts here are correct this story could pose a problem for Huckabee. Not that I see Huckabee really making a legitimate move to threaten the lead of the Big 4, but if he did then this story could come back to haunt him. Apparently he pulled a Dukakis/Willie Horton move, and commuted the sentence of a convicted rapist, who then went on to rape again. Not the type of stuff that goes over well with most conservatives, especially when the leading guy, Rudy, is someone who has a brilliant track record on crime.

Without having read your linked story, I'll tell you that the dumond case is old news.
I don't actually think it would pose Huck a problem, on the merits, because there's a difference between a Northeastern Massachusetts liberal with an ethnic name, as compared to an Arkansas gun-totin' baptist preacher with a hick name. Huckabee doesn't have to be concerned with being viewed as too merciful/soft, Dukakis did. It might actually help Huck in a weird way, in that it goes against pigeon-holing him as a Hang-'em-high Southerner.
On the flip side, if I remember correctly, the one weird thing was that Huck didn't really own up to it. He kind of tried to pass the buck on the parole board, or some such jive. He should've just taken the heat on it, and said, "I thought clemency was the right path. In this case it was clearly the wrong one." Case closed.
I guess the issue - at least the way the Globe frames it - is that this cannot necessarily be viewed as an isolated incident, but rather is in the spirit of Huckabee's philosophy of forgiveness and redemption. So they are intimating that this goes to the core of Huck's belief system, consistent with his previous quote that a lot of people in the jail system would be better off in drug rehab instead. Goes to the "compassionate" conservative aspect. It's the type of thing where you would have direct conflict between Rudy's approach and Huck's approach, if those two were the front-runners and going at each other head-to-head. In the grand scheme of things I agree though that this will be a non-issue, especially since I don't see Huck making much impact, unless he's tapped to be a VP candidate.
