Mittmentum..

..is apparently over. He might be announcing his withdrawal right now at CPAC.

There goes the best candidate this year, IMO. Looks like it's McCain's to have now, since Huck can't stop him. The question is, will he pick Huck as VP to shore up support in the south, or does he have other plans?

Oh, and more good news: apparently on top of the record $32 M Obama raised in Jan, he just closed another whopping $7.2 M in the last 48 HOURS!

McCain's fundraising ability has been anemic, he needs to bring someone else on board unless his selection as nominee suddenly results in big $ coming in.

Mitt, in his own words:

Mitt Romney suspended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination Thursday, saying if he continued it would "forestall the launch of a national campaign and be making it easier for Sen. Clinton or Obama to win."

"In this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror. This is not an easy decision. I hate to lose," the former Massachusetts governor said.

"If this were only about me, I'd go on. But it's never been only about me. I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America, in this time of war I feel I have to now stand aside for our party and for our country."

Exceptionally well stated, if you ask me.

It's just a shot in the dark, but I've got to think he goes with someone who's earned his respect as a peer: e.g., Fred Thompson, Bill Frist, Lindsey Graham, possibly Rudy; over someone who he thinks will help him via some political calculation (Huck helping in the South). He seems to value his gut over such calculations.

I'm gonna stick with my prediction and say Fred gets the nod--he helps solidify the SoCons and draws in the South...
