Gingrich
According to the latest polls, Romney is struggling to break into double-digits, while Gingrich is picking up steam and Rudy continues to pull away from the pack. Now, while I would strongly consider supporting Newt if he ran, as would many Repubs, I seriously doubt he could win in a general election in '08, and I do NOT want to see Billary in office. Unfortunately, Newt is old news and damaged goods in MSM, and neither one tends to run well in general elections in US. The smart play would be for Mitt to propose Newt as VP, a Romney/Gingrich ticket would be unstoppable. I have no idea whether Newt would be interested in VP (probably not), but I can definitely see him being interested in a senior cabinet position (Sec. of State?) Mitt should work behind the scenes to suggest that if Newt throws his support behind Mitt and actively campaigns for him, he'll be rewarded with cabinet position or VP.

The leads that Rudy are starting to string together are becoming pretty commanding. If he gets much further in front of McCain, we might see McCain out of the race a lot sooner then anyone thought. Unlike other candidates who were running on specific biographical or ideological points, McCain's campaign has been focused on creating an aura of "inevitability" from the get-go. If that aura is completely shattered by June of '07, what is John going to campaign on?
Hawkish on Iraq? So are the other big-two candidates.
Cutting taxes? He has no credibility there, after opposing Bush in the first term.
Controlling spending? Sure, but he's the only of the big three who's actually never been in charge of a budget.
Immigration? His position is better suited for the Democratic primary (same goes for Rudy, BTW).
Meanwhile, the Herald and Globe are just murdering Mitt, and he's not responding forcefully enough. A lot of damage has been done to his credibility in the past month.
Mitt's most convincing when you're listening to him speak. He needs to get a microphone, stand in front of a camera, and get mad at all the people who are calling him a liar and an empty suit.
Until he does that, the charges being leveled against him will continue to stick.
I agree, McCain is done. As I mentioned earlier, at the end of the day his primary appeal is to indies and central-leaning Dems. Any Repub who supports McCain would likely find that Rudy or Mitt would be a better choice for them.
Mitt is taking a beating by both Globe and Herald. On the one hand, that in and of itself is not so meaningful - MA is going Dem regardless of who runs. On the other hand, if it is symptomatic of his unwillingness or inability to defend himself, it poses a greater threat. As Fredo mentions, Mitt is at his best when he's in front of a mike on camera. He needs to start making a stronger name for himself. If he doesn't start approaching 15+% in the polls, he runs the risk of losing before we even get to the start line.
