Thank you, Bill Kristol
I've had my differences (small "d") with the Weekly Standard crew in terms of the direction of the conservative movement. That said, Bill Kristol hits a home run with his column in today's NY Times (wow, that still sounds weird) explaining the overreaction to McCain in many conservative circles. It's a must read.
Likewise, Steven Calabresi, co-founder of the Federalist Society (the vanguard of conservative jurisprudence), wrote a similar op-ed in today's WSJ explaining how a McCain Presidency would be a win for conservatives on Supreme Court nominations as well. Another must read.

McCain's surrogates are certainly working hard to placate conservatives. When McCain goes to CPAC later this week, he'll have the opportunity to do the same thing, directly and in person.
One can only hope that people like Rush and Ann are making their over-the-top positions simply in an effort to sway people to vote Romney and avoid the situation of McCain as the nominee in the first place, but that if McCain wins they will fall in line. Then again, who knows.
BTW, talk about an understatement from Kristol: William F. Buckley, the father of the conservative movement, skewered liberals, but always with wit and élan. Was there ever anything as enjoyable as watching Buckley run circles around whoever he was debating? For my money, hands down the best debater the party has ever seen. Not only did he have a great command of the topics, but he would always flash that trademark "I just F'ed you" smile when he was done making a mockery of his opponent's position.
It's funny, despite reading a lot of Buckley quips and comments over the years, I can't remember seeing him debate. Guess I'm dating myself there.
I didn't see him often, but there were a few times I was flipping around and happened across some channel showing highlights of some of his debates over the years. Always a gem, if you can find any online I'd recommend them.
