McCain puts entitlement programs in the crosshairs
From Mike Allen at the Politico:
The complete McCain economic plan is here.
McCain is showing that he understands the crux of our fiscal problems by addressing entitlements. He is also showing political courage.
Unfortunately, it is also a possible death warrant for his campaign.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) plans to promise on Monday that he will balance the federal budget by the end of his first term by curbing wasteful spending and overhauling entitlement programs, including Social Security, his advisers told Politico.
The vow to take on Social Security puts McCain in a political danger zone that thwarted President Bush after he named it the top domestic priority of his second term.
The complete McCain economic plan is here.
McCain is showing that he understands the crux of our fiscal problems by addressing entitlements. He is also showing political courage.
Unfortunately, it is also a possible death warrant for his campaign.

More unfortunately he is also opening himself up to ridicule and direct attacks on his claims of providing "straight talk." I don't think he will possibly be able to present an economic plan that could possibly cut enough spending - while maintaining the present tax code - to balance the budget in 4 years. Unless he's going to cut heavily into military budget, it ain't gonna happen.
