Mitt?

My theory that McCain's team floated Ridge and Lieberman as a ruse to: (a) keep Indies in the fold, and (b) mainly to boost enthusiasm for the real pick, whoever it might be, above and beyond what they'd normally expect may hold some water. According to Heilmann of New Yorker:

"McCain and his people [may be] engaged in a bit of elaborate gamesmanship designed to make Evangelicals more grateful than they otherwise might be for the selection" of "a running mate who, despite being pro-life, the religious right has some qualms about." His name? Mitt Romney... It does have the added benefit of explaining why the McCain machine has suddenly started spreading rumors about Joe Lieberman--a "longshot" who would, in our opinion, "bring little to the ticket." If you think social conservatives will be grateful not to see a pro-choice Republican as veep, the thinking goes, just imagine how they'll react to the absence of a pro-choice Democrat.

If this is what turns out to happen, I say well played by team McCain. Bottom line is the base can't reach overwhelming agreement about who they do want for VP, but they certainly have about who they DON'T want. Get the base focused on those 2 people as a real possibility, and they'll be extremely grateful when it turns out to be someone else, regardless of who it is.

This flap hitting drudge today might push the needle from Mitt to Pawlenty. Multi-millionaire Mitt or Sam's Club Tim?

The gamesmanship runs a counter risk, BTW. Even if conservatives breathe a sigh of relief, moderates will feel that it shows McCain can be bullied by Rush and "special interest groups" on the right.

Of course, then there's the chance that maybe this whole search is a lot less organized and orchestrated than we all think, and Mac is just as confused about who he's going to pick as we are.

I'm starting to have faith his campaign is more savvy and organized than I had originally thought. Apparently the shuffling he did a few weeks ago helped, as his latest series of ads really hit the spot and nailed Obama.

$$$Mitt$$$ combined with John "I'm too rich to recall number of houses and value" McCain might not be the best combo, especially in economically troubling times. That said, I think the average person is seeing that they relate better to McCain than Obama. Obama comes across as too cerebral, standard "intellectual" liberal, very detached. That was certainly bill clinton's greatest gift, he was one of the few liberals who could really connect emotionally with the typical American. So I'm hoping McCain might have some latitude here, especially after his solid performance at Saddleback.

I'm impressed with Heilman's reporting--I guess when Pelf goes the distance, he needs something to keep himself occupied in the pen...

It explains a lot. Maybe if he started paying attention to game situation and pitch sequences, instead of reading Occ Obs on his Blackberry, the results would improve.
