Fred Eviscerates Huck

Wow. If you've been watching the FNC SC GOP debate, you saw Fred Thompson call out Huckabee as a Democrat. If the facts he gave are indeed facts, there's some truth the claim. I'll bet this hurts Huckabee such that he finishes third by 4 points or more in SC.

Sounds like Fred had a big night. Wish I'd seen the debate, but I was busy eating fine French food, drinking fine scotch whiskey, smoking a fine cigar, and gambling money on the casino floor [nothing fine about the results there] ;)

Anyway, I saw some speculation that Fred's main purpose in staying in the race was to split the conservative vote in SC between himself and Huckabee to give McCain a winning plurality. Seems plausible given his long-term track record with Mac, and the fact that he waited so long getting in the race b/c he didn't want to step on Mac's toes. He only jumped in when McCain looked dead in the water.

Freddie did indeed find some testicular fortitude last night.
He had the best lines of the night right up until the moderator asked Ron Paul: "About your electability--do you have any?"
Ouch...

Actually, I think there's a good shot Thompson may win SC with that debate performance last night. Thompson was the early favorite there until Huck caught lightning in a bottle, but if Thompson gives people a reason to vote for himself with an energetic performance like last night, he might take the state.

I still remain leery of Huck. First, I don't think he has the creds to step in as president. Second, except on social issues, he is basically a Democrat. Third, while I agree his economic populism message might play well in this election, especially if recession is here, at the end of the day I think the MSM will destroy him and Dem voters will turn out in droves against him. I believe he would be, in this election following all the pent-up Dem anger at Bush, our version of Hillary: the most polarizing figure that the Dems would rally against.

If Thompson shows life from here on out and some real fire in the belly, he'd be my #2 choice behind Mitt. I think he's right on the issues and could be a good leader, but I cannot get behind him unless he's shows a sustained interest in the position.

I commented during the IA live blogging that I didn't understand the appeal of Fred. After the debate I do. As far as positions go, he seems to be most in line with me. I have to agree with y'all that he needs to want it a lot more to get any support.

Here's a bit of Fred's commentary on Huck:

"He would be a Christian leader, but he would also bring about liberal economic policies, liberal foreign policies. He believes we have an arrogant foreign policy … he believes that Guantanamo should be closed down … he believed in taxpayer-funded programs for illegals, as he did in Arkansas. He has the endorsement of the National Education Association, and the NEA said it was because of his opposition to vouchers."

The folks over at Human Events have decided to endorse Fred Thompson, and in analyzing all the Republican candidates echo a lot of what we've discussed here. They basically say Fred is the most well-aligned on both fiscal and social issues with true Republican ideals. It seems like they'd pick Mitt as a second choice, and they really tear into the rest of the field.
